The European Union is a social actor. While it aims at shaping the international society, it is also shaped by it. There are inbound and outbound trajectories for norms, policies and influence more generally. I look at these interactions, with a special focus on the ways in which international institutions and processes have an impact on EU external relations. This is what my two co-edited books are about. And since the crisis of the liberal international order has also had an impact on the EU, I am right now paying attention to the way the EU has reacted to its fragmentation, as well as to the contestation and politicization of EU foreign policy. I have co-edited two special issues on these topics. I also conduct research on international environmental politics.
I am affiliated to two institutions based in the greater Barcelona area, pictured above. I am an associate professor of International Relations at the UAB (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), where I am vice-dean of academic affairs at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology, and a senior research associate at IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals). I teach courses on the contemporary international system, international environmental politics, and IR theory. I am also part of the Observatory of European Foreign Policy, a research group based at IBEI.
